BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Learn to give, learn to live.

10 steps to start volunteering.

01

Start by considering the issues that are important to you and the skills you can possibly contribute. What are the causes and advocacies that deeply resonate with you? For instance, if you want to help the homeless, could you volunteer at a shelter, food bank or soup kitchen?

02

Once you've an idea of the causes you’re enthusiastic about, look for volunteer openings in your area. Commence your search by going online and exploring local charities. Ask for recommendations from welfare groups, colleagues, schools, friends and family.

03

There’s an array of volunteer finder platforms that can connect you with meaningful opportunities. From animal shelters to conservation projects, these sites and apps are great as there’s something for everybody. Simply find a platform, register and get searching.

04

Now it’s time to decide on a social cause that you're passionate about. Give some thought to how and where you want to make a difference. Make sure your chosen volunteer path is purposeful to you. It should align with your hopes and values.

05

If you’ve found a volunteer position that appeals to you, next up is to research additional details. Learn as much as you can about the volunteer organisation and what is expected of you. Read available reviews and recommendations.

06

Most charities and non-profits offer details on how to get involved. Many even have an online application process. If not, reach out to them to ask if they're accepting volunteers. Check that opportunities match your skills, schedule and interests.

07

Determine how much time you can give as a volunteer, whilst taking into account work and family responsibilities. Set aside a clear timetable of days and times to commit. It’s best to begin with a manageable commitment and up participation slowly.

08

Some organisations require their volunteers to attend an orientation session or complete training. You could be asked to undergo a background check. Not only that, but you may have to sign a waiver or disclaimer.

09

All told, there comes a time when you simply need to get started. Be sure to follow through on your word and show up on time. Act responsibly and deliver on the work that you've agreed to as part of the activity.

10

Make volunteering part of your purpose and once you start, keep going. Besides making a positive impact on your community and issues you care about, giving back will do wonders for your wellbeing.
