10 tips to break into modelling.

01

The easiest way to break into modelling is to focus on a niche that suits your attributes. Whether runway, plus-size, body parts or mature, you need the right look for the type of modelling you wish to explore. Stay realistic and opt for a specialisation that matches your shape and features. Consider where you fit in the industry and align with projects that play to your strengths.

02

Modelling entails looking after your appearance and keeping in good shape. Be sure to eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep. To get picture perfect, take care of your hair, skin and nails, stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

03

A good model creates captivating body shapes that look great when caught on camera. Learn to strike a pose by watching videos and practicing in front of a mirror. Experiment with different body angles and facial expressions, while keeping movements fluid.

04

Now, look for ways to gain experience and build your skills as a model. Can you help a local brand or charity fashion show? You might pick up tips on how to pose, walk a runway, deal with clients and photographers. All while boosting your confidence and portfolio.

05

As you go on more shoots, gather your best shots and assemble them into a portfolio. A standout portfolio is essential to attract potential clients and land jobs. Presentation is everything so show off different looks within your modelling type as one cohesive package.

06

Having a website and being active on social media can help build your personal brand and exposure. You have to take charge of your own self-promotion to succeed. Aside from images, can you share your behind-the-scenes stories, modelling experiences and updates?

07

It's a good idea to whip up a model composite card and start networking with fellow models, photographers and agents. Expand your network by joining talent and modelling agencies, attending industry events and connecting with fashion trade professionals.

08

Most models require the help of an agency in order to find work. Research the agencies that specialise in your niche. Once you come across a reputable agency that appears a good fit, submit digitals (AKA polaroids), your measurements and relevant experience.

09

A casting call or ‘go-see’ is a set time that an agency puts aside to meet models. Make sure to familiarise yourself with the hiring brand and their requirements. First impressions count so dress appropriately, be punctual and remain patient and professional.

10

You’re more likely to generate repeat bookings if you’ve a reputation for being punctual, hardworking, easy-to-work, reliable, courteous and polite. Modelling requires strong interpersonal skills as you'll interact with many parties from shows to shoots on-site.
