Ghana

As part of our Schools for Africa drive, I went on an inspiring trip to Ghana to explore opportunities for an ongoing association with local NGOs, schools and orphanages.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to engage with students and young people, who despite a lack of support and resources, are determined to complete their education. I also visited a shelter for orphans, many of whom have lost families due to HIV and AIDS, or have been forced to leave as a result of extreme poverty.

In the course of my field project to the Volta Region of Ghana, I saw firsthand the harsh reality of life for so many children across the African continent.

With the support of the Dream Africa Volunteer Service (DAVS) I spent several weeks in Ghana volunteering at local schools and orphanages, whilst observing the situation of children with regards to education.

On the first day of my visit, I was greeted with much curiosity by the children of God’s Divine Academy in Ho which was to become home for the duration of my stay.

Soon after arriving, I was then to roll up my sleeves and join other volunteer workers visiting schools, observing classes in action and interacting with children, in addition to helping out at DAVS’ local office.

A particular highlight of the trip was the opportunity to visit the Volta Home for Children, an orphanage in Golokwati where JEM was pleased to sponsor the painting of a new school facility recently erected in the grounds.

It was eye-opening to hear from children who struggle with difficulties that are unimaginable to most people in developed countries.

That said, it was heartening to learn that even children who come from the poorest of backgrounds have big dreams.

On reflection, my visit to Ghana was both insightful and inspiring.

Not only that, but I couldn’t help but feel encouraged by the amazing progress achieved by young people and the courage they show every day.

Looking ahead, my hope is for JEM’s School for Africa campaign to continue exploring ways to support programmes in Ghana and across the continent.

In turn, this might encompass improving school facilities, increasing access to water and toilets, and providing educational supplies such as desks, books, pencils and writing materials.
